Many people convert to Islam every day and become a part of 2 billion large Ummah. In our series of revert stories, we are exploring all those important and inspiring stories from the internet and presenting them to you in a special.
This story is next in the series of a long series which will be published soon. This is the story of a French-British actress, scholar, journalist, and writer who chose to become a Muslim in her life.
Let’s get inspired by her story and explore it. She was born as Emilie Siobhan Geoghegan François on 20 December 1982 in London, England. She was an actress and acted in a popular English movie in the 90s.
Emilie then shifted her career from acting towards writing and journalism and pursued her Ph.D. from Oxford University which she completed in 2017.
She embraced Islam after graduating from Oxford University. Before that, she was a Catholic with many doubts in her mind. She believed in God but with mistrust of organized religion.
In the beginning just to prove her Muslim friends wrong she started reading Qur’an. It was a prejudiced attempt to read Qur’an but as she read Qur’an, she became open-minded.
Her first inspiring moment was when she read Surah Al-Fatiha which is the opening chapter of the Qur’an. She says, “The opening of Al Fatiha, with its address to the whole of mankind, psychologically stopped me in my tracks.
It spoke of previous scriptures in a way which I both recognized, but also differed. It clarified many of the doubts I had about Christianity.
She also started feeling that it is she who alone will be judged for her deeds in this world and would be punished in the hereafter.
According to her Qur’an is the source of morality and as a philosophy lover, she found everything in Qur’an. “It combined Kant, Hume, Sartre, and Aristotle. It somehow managed to address and answer the deep philosophical questions posed over centuries of human existence and answer its most fundamental one, ‘why are we here?” Emilie remarked.
She was very much inspired by the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon Him). She recognized the Holy Prophet as a man who was tasked with a momentous mission, like his predecessors, Moses, Jesus, and Abraham.
She made proper research and read authentic sources because she was aware of the dirty tricks of the European writers. After which she became further sure that she is heading on the right track.
During the period of her internal assessment, her friends thought that she was going through a tough phase of her life and would recover soon but little did they know that she would be a complete person.
Some of her closest friends supported her mentally and emotionally during this phase. They understood her and stood by her.
She doesn’t acknowledge herself as a convertor revert and she doesn’t see it as anything opposite to her culture. She followed the truth and her inner-conscience. She didn’t find herself as a part of the Muslim community at first but later with the time she managed to.
She doesn’t hesitate to point out what’s wrong with our community. She didn’t find many mosques welcoming and also found people more and more careful about outer appearance while no one cared about their inner appearance the actual appearance.
She says, “The Prophet’s message was always that you repel bad with good that you always respond to evil with good and always remember that God loves justice so even when people are committing serious injustices against you, you have a moral responsibility and a moral obligation in front of God to always uphold justice and never yourself transgress those limits.”
Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said: ‘Forgive him who wrongs you. Join him who cuts you off. Do good to him who does evil to you and speak the truth even if it is against yourself.’ Quoted Emilie who is now known as Myriam.
She renamed herself as Myriam François-Cerrah and she recently contributed to a series of videos on Islam produced in the UK titled (Inspired by Muhammad). Myriam is now a prominent British journalist and a Muslimah from the flourishing upper-middle-class Britain.
The British actress who converted to Islam paved ways for other British women to take a step and embrace it too.
